Aiguilles-en-Queyras, Capital of the Upper Guil Valley
Aiguilles-en-Queyras, at 1,470 metres above sea level on the banks of the Guil river, is the main commune of the upper Queyras valley. Surrounded by summits exceeding 3,000 metres, it is the ideal base for exploring the Queyras Regional Nature Park: 350 km of marked trails, high-altitude lakes and border passes into Italy. Its medieval fortress — which watches over the Combe du Queyras gorge — is a reminder of the site's strategic importance.
Lesser known than the major Savoyard resorts, Aiguilles offers intimate skiing between 1,700 and 2,450 metres with rarely crowded slopes. In summer, the village is the starting point for the GR58 (Tour du Queyras) and hikes to the Col Agnel, the natural border with Piedmont.

What to Do in Aiguilles and the Queyras
In winter, the Queyras Ski area links Aiguilles, Arvieux and Saint-Véran across 70 km of pistes above 1,700 metres. Ski touring routes to the Pic de Rochebrune (3,320 m) and the Col de la Noire are beloved by seasoned backcountry skiers. The Combe du Queyras gorge is a wonderful snowshoe route.
In summer, the medieval fortress at Aiguilles (12th century) opens to visitors from June to September. The artisan market showcases local produce: goat's cheese, woodcarvings and essential oils. The Lac de Roue and Lac de Souliers, between 2,000 and 2,300 m, are reached in a 3-hour walk from the village.
